You can plan for future and repeating transactions right in the account register—and then use that information to help you budget.

How to Add a Scheduled Transaction

When you know a transaction is coming down the road (especially a  repeating transaction), add it to your account register now to stay organized. If it's a linked account, or you're using File-Based Importing, YNAB will automatically match transactions when they import.

  1. Click the account name in the left sidebar to open the account register.
  2. Click the Add Transaction button.
  3. Enter the date of the next occurrence of the transaction. If you want it to repeat, select the frequency of the transaction by using the drop-down menu below the calendar.
  4. Your transaction will now appear at the top of your register in gray. It will not yet affect your budget.
  5. When the date of the next occurrence comes, the transaction will appear in bold in your register, waiting for you to approve it (we want to make sure it actually happened as planned!).

When Scheduled Transactions are entered in your account, they will automatically be marked as uncleared. When the transaction clears your bank, be sure to mark it as such in YNAB. 

Cash accounts are the exception—Scheduled Transactions entered in cash accounts will automatically be marked as cleared. You can read more about that in our Handling Cash article!

Another way to create a scheduled transaction is to double-click on a transaction already in your register, click the date field, and then click the Make Repeating button where you can choose the repeating option you need. That will create a new transaction for the next occurrence. Be sure to set the frequency and update the date if necessary!

Upcoming Transactions in your Budget

When you're looking at the Budget screen, you can see upcoming scheduled transactions for any category for that month—and how much you’ll have left after they happen. All you need to do is select the category and look in the Inspector in the right sidebar. If you click on the Upcoming Transaction link, a window will pop up with a list of any upcoming transactions! Clicking on those transactions will even take you to the account register if you need to edit them.

If you haven't assigned enough for an upcoming transaction, you’ll see a yellow alert (because yellow means underfunded!). At the beginning of the month, you can use the Underfunded option under Auto Assign to make sure you set aside enough for all your upcoming, scheduled transactions.
 After selecting a category, one upcoming transaction is shown in right sidebar under Available Balance

Hide Scheduled Transactions

If you have lots of scheduled transactions, you may want to hide them sometimes. 

To filter them out of your account register view, click anywhere on the Scheduled Transactions header. 

You'll see that the line for Scheduled Transactions is still at the top of your budget, but the list is collapsed. You can click again to expand that collapsed list and see the scheduled transactions that fall within your filtered dates.
